The types of face masks – Which one suits you?

Have you ever questioned yourself: “Are peel off masks or wash off masks better?”, “Which mask is better? Wash off or sheet masks?”, and so there are different kinds of similar questions. Well, there is no specific type that is generally better than another type! They all have different purposes, and per skin type or condition it depends which type of mask will be better to use.

In here you will find the different kinds of face masks, the differences in benefits and what they mainly do to the skin. Furthermore, you will read which mask type will be better for which skin type or condition for the best results. Last but not least we will be giving you some recommendations!

The different types of masks

Sheet masks
Facial Mask from 'CHICA N CHICO'

Sheet masks, the face-shaped sheets soaked in solution full of good ingredients for the skin. It gained popularity worldwide after more and more people got to notice it from K-beauty products as it appeared for a quite long time in K-beauty skincare routines!

  • Its main benefits

The main benefit of sheet masks is that they bring a lot of moisturize into the skin and on top of that you won’t be washing it off! The sheet itself makes it possible for the product to be delivered into the skin even deeper. Depending on the benefits of the sheet mask itself, it can focus on brightening, tightening, relieving/calming skin, etc. But the main focus of all of these masks are that they are specifically hydrating.

Wash off masks

This type of mask is the most popular and there is a broad range of different kinds of was off masks. Some of them are clay masks, gel masks, sugar masks, cream masks, etc.

  • Its main benefits

Wash off masks that are clay and charcoal masks mostly get into the pores. As they dry up this is noticeable (tip of the day – don’t let it dry completely). Therefore, these masks draw out impurities from deep in the pores. They also absorb excess oil and dirt, contributing to clogged pores and less oily skin. It softens and soothes the skin while it acts as a detoxifier to remove toxins. They do also mildly exfoliate skin. So, there are clay masks too that don’t dry but draws the impurities from the pores but focuses more on hydrating and therefore better for sensitive skin, this is what the other types of wash-off masks such as gel masks, sugar masks, cream masks, etc. also do.

Peel off masks

These are mostly applied as a thin layer, to be let dry completely and then peeling it off. Some are quite harsh and can be painful when peeling off and some are gentle which doesn’t hurt at all. Blackhead remover peel off masks (the charcoal ones) are mostly the ones that are the harshest (is that a word..? Oh well, you probably know what I wanted to say).

  • Its main benefits

Peel off masks gently remove the outermost layer if the skin. Therefore, it will get rid of dead skin and dullness. This provides a smoother skin texture and balance the pigmentation of the skin. It helps fading fine lines and cleaning out pores (though not as deeply as clay masks and other wash off masks). Some give extra benefits such as soothing the skin, cooling the skin, making the skin glow, etc.

Sleep masks

This is the skincare product applied at the last step of your skincare routine. Sleep masks come in different textures, gel, cream, etc. And they come in a variety of thickness too, some are light, some thicker and heavier.

  • Its main benefits

The main benefit usually is hydrating. It delivers extra nourishment into the skin as it is left for a longer time it gives the skin time to absorb the ingredients very well. While you sleep, it will be absorbed into the skin much better too! You’ll wake up looking glowing~!

Which mask is recommended for which skin type?

Normal skin

It won’t differ which mask to use, with normal skin there is not really a specific mask type recommended. Peel off masks can be a great choice, depending on your choice if you want a gentle peel off or a harsh one. Then you should more look at your skin condition at specific times. If you might have a breakout then wash off masks are recommended, especially clay and charcoal masks.

If you have normal skin but feel dehydrated or at times becomes dry because of surrounding factors (such as air-conditioning for example), use face masks which focus more hydration.

Dry skin

Sheet masks are recommended for dry skin. But keep in mind that sheet masks won’t really clean your pores as wash off masks do. Do if you want to focus on clearing your pores, depending on the situation, it is the best to go for non-clay and non-charcoal masks. So, asks that won’t dry on the face but still needs to be washed off.

Oily skin

For oily skin wash-off masks are recommended. Especially clay and charcoal masks as these focus on absorbing oil from the face as well.

Sensitive skin

For sensitive skin sheet masks and wash off masks that aren’t clay or charcoal are recommended. So, wash off masks like sugar masks, gel masks, cream masks, etc., masks that don’t dry. Gentle peel off masks are great too, especially if it has cooling and soothing effects.

Combination skin

This depends on the degree of how much the ratio of dry and oily is. You can always multi mask (use clay or charcoal on oilier parts and wash off masks that don’t dry on the drier parts of the face). Often use of sheet masks are recommended if your skin points more towards the dry side. You could also use clay or charcoal masks on only the oilier parts of the face only. And afterwards use a sheet mask. Try it all out and do what feels best to your skin! Peel off masks are a good choice too!

Acne prone skin

Wash off masks are recommended that will do a good job at clearing pores; therefore, clay or charcoal masks are recommended for acne prone skin! Peel off masks can be an option too. 😊

Depending on what you want to achieve, like tightening, brightening, moisturizing, etc., you can use your mask!

About sleeping masks

As for sleeping masks, all skin types can use them, but you could take a good look at the main function of the sleeping mask. Of course, they all mainly focus on hydrating but besides that they each have a focus based on the needs of your skin. Though, if you have oily and acne prone skin, try to get a lighter texture. If you have dry skin you can go for a thicker texture. If you have sensitive skin, a gel type might give a cooling effect too.

If certain masks or mask types have been suggested for a specific skin type it doesn’t mean you can use other types from time to time! Therefore, these are recommendations! So for example, if for your skin type the type recommended was a wash off mask, it doesn’t mean you can’t use sheet masks!
